Andy Senti Retires from BLM after 60 Years of Service

August 7, 2009

Andy Senti is a Realty Specialist and has worked with the BLM for 60 years. His fellow employees say there's no one else with his knowledge, experience or history.  "He is a walking encyclopedia," BLM Deputy State Director Lynn Rust said.

Senti spends 12 hours a day, 7 days a week at the office, usually in his workspace, which is filled with maps, charts and laws from the past 150 years.  "This stuff goes back to the beginning of Colorado," Senti said.

His fellow employees have expected him to retire many times over his career, but the 80-year-old just keeps working.  "I went to Africa for a couple weeks back in 1970 on vacation, and I don't think I've really recovered from that.  So, I've always got something that needs to get done yesterday," Senti said.  He also says he'd rather just work until he drops dead than retire.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said, "Andy is the longest, current-serving, BLM employee. He joined BLM in 1954!"  Before joining the BLM, Senti worked for the Forest Service and served during World War II.  "I am proud, deeply proud and humbled to recognize Andy Senti for his 60 years of service to the United States of America and to the Bureau of Land Management," Salazar said.

Senti said he plans to continue working for as long as he can.
