An attorney and professor at the University of Houston Law Center has been named the Bureau of Land Management's deputy director for policy.

Most recently, Marcilynn Burke taught environmental law courses in Texas on land use and management, natural resources, and property. She has also served as visiting assistant professor of law at the Rutgers School of Law in Camden, N.J., and at Seattle University School of Law.

Previously, Burke worked for four years at the Washington, D.C., office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, where she focused on environmental law, antitrust, and civil and criminal litigation.

"Marcilynn Burke brings a well-rounded knowledge of natural resource and environmental stewardship issues to the table," BLM Director Robert Abbey said in a statement. "Her expertise in renewable energy and other land management issues will make her a valuable member of the BLM's leadership team."

Burke earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and her law degree from Yale Law School. She clerked for U.S. District Judge Raymond Jackson of the Eastern District of Virginia.
