The BLM Lands The National System of Public Lands comprises about 245 million surface acres located in 28 states, including Alaska, or about 13% of the total land surface of the United States, and 700 million acres of subsurface mineral estate. The demands on these lands are numerous and often conflicting. BLM's multiple use management mission is a difficult one. A major ket to progress is having an informed public, a public that is aware of the issues and the facts regarding the issues. Too often the public knows only the views of special interest groups, which may present only part of the story. The public needs more balanced, non-political presentation of the issues. The public can also benefit from a better understanding of the role that professional land and resource managers play in the management of the National System of Public Lands.
