The Public Lands Foundation's Mission is to advocate and work for the retention of America's National System of Public Lands in public hands, professionally and sustainably managed for responsible common use and enjoyment.

The Goals of the Public Lands Foundation are to ...

Keep the National System of Public Lands in public ownership and open to responsible use by the public.

Support multiple use management of these lands under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act.

Encourage professionalism by BLM employees.

Increase the public's understanding of and support for the proper management of the National System of Public Lands.

Encourage contact, communication, and coordination among users of BLM managed lands and interest groups.

Facilitate contact and communication among BLM retirees.

Retain records of BLM's history and its employees.

Recognize individual and group achievements.

The BLM Lands

The National System of Public Lands comprises about 245 million surface acres located in 28 states, including Alaska, or about 13% of the total land surface of the United States, and 700 million acres of subsurface mineral estate.

The demands on these lands are numerous and often conflicting.  BLM's multiple use management mission is a difficult one.  A major ket to progress is having an informed public, a public that is aware of the issues and the facts regarding the issues.  Too often the public knows only the views of special interest groups, which may present only part of the story.  The public needs more balanced, non-political presentation of the issues.  The public can also benefit from a better understanding of the role that professional land and resource managers play in the management of the National System of Public Lands.  The PLF strives to satisfy these needs.
