In 1993, the Public Lands Foundation established an Archives to be a permanent repository for documents and materials related to the history of the BLM, its employees and the management of the public lands of the United States. This PLF Archives is located at the BLM's National Training Center, and is managed by the Phoenix Chapter of the Public Lands Foundation.
The PLF Archives contains a growing collection of books, papers, photographs, BLM and DOI publications, personal recollections, video and audio interviews with BLM retirees, PLF generated documents, and other historical memorabilia that have been donated by retirees and their families or obtained from BLM offices.
The PLF recognizes that the BLM's "official" records are kept in the National Archives and in legislative files, and that many articles and books have been written on the history of the agency. What was lacking was the means to collect and store the individual personal involvement in, and perspectives of, BLM's history; background information on how past public land policies and programs were implemented; and how they contributed to the resource controversies that BLM deals with today and in the future. The purpose of the PLF Archives is to capture these experiences and memories. The Archives was established to store and make the collected information available to BLMers, public land historians and others.
If you are interested in contributing to or utilizing the Archives, contact PLF Archives, c/o BLM National Training Center, 9828 North 31st Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85015-2517, or Archives Manager Glen Collins at glendone@aol.com. Copies of Archives materials will be provided upon request. There may be a charge to defray the cost of reproduction and mailing. A fee of $25 per hour will be charged for reproducing large numbers of copies. If you like the work we are doing in the PLF Archives and want to help support the project, tax deductable financial donations to help pay for filing cabinets and other supplies may be sent to the PLF Archives at the address listed above
The lists of materials in the PLF Archives is displayed in a 0000 to 9000 Subject Code system that is patterned after the BLM subject/function filing system. Historical materials are listed in the following major groupings:
