EVERT L. BROWN…… US Government and BLM history

Evert Brown was born in 1905 at Fruita, Colorado. and spent most of his early life on a livestock ranch on East Salt Creek just north of Grand Jct., Co. He attended the public schools in Fruita and graduated from High School in 1925. He attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colo for one year, but dropped out because of hard times.

He was able to obtain seasonal employment as a land surveyor for the Federal Government in the summer season. In 1927, He married Hazel Beeson and they had two sons – Norman and Bud(Lowell). Bud later had a long BLM career and retired in 1982.

In 1934, Evert received a full time appointment as a surveyor where he worked in Wyoming and Kentucky. In mid 1935, the Kentucky project was closed down and he returned to Denver, Co. only to be furlough. In 1936, he received an appointment with the Division of Grazing as a range examiner to supervise livestock use and range improvement development program for the DG-2 C.C.C. camp. In addition, he taught range conservation, drafting, surveying, and mapping to select groups of C.C.C. enrollees.

In 1938, he accepted a permanent position as Grazier Aid at Meeker, Co. Two years later, he was appointed to District Grazier and selected to organize and supervise a new Grazing Office at Canyon City, Co. In 1943, he was transferred to a larger district at Montrose, Co. with a wide variety of duties. In 1955, he was placed in charge of two combined districts (1 & 6) at Craig, Co.

In 1957, he was appointed by the Secretary of Interior to be Alaska’s Director of Lands and was granted leave to perform these duties. Since Alaska had not yet achieved statehood, this was possible since the Interior Department still had jurisdiction. Ahead of him lies the monumental task of selecting, acquiring, and managing millions of acres of territorial lands. With the passage of the Alaska Statehood Act, his work shifted back to the BLM.

He returned to BLM in January 1959 as Lands and Minerals officer for the State of New Mexico and retired in December 1963. In March 1964, He was awarded the Department’s Honor Award -for Meritorious Service.
